Senior Medical Coder

Role Overview Optum India, a global leader in technology-driven healthcare delivery, is looking for an experienced Senior Medical Coder to join its growing team in Chennai. In this role, you will play a key part in improving patient health outcomes by ensuring precise and compliant coding of professional medical services. Key Responsibilities - Review and abstract relevant clinical data from medical records to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes with appropriate modifiers - Code multispecialty outpatient, urgent care, and inpatient records while maintaining a throughput of 12 charts per hour and meeting quality benchmarks - Monitor and implement updates from AMA, AHA, and CMS guidelines on an ongoing basis - Evaluate and apply CPT codes for minor surgical procedures, vaccines, laboratory services, screening codes, and PQRS codes based on clinical documentation - Perform NCCI edit checks and review LCD and NCD coverage determinations to validate and adjust codes and modifiers accordingly - Ensure all coding activities comply with HIPAA confidentiality standards and client-specific coding guidelines - Organise and prioritise workload to meet regulatory timelines and resolve coding edits within stipulated timeframes Required Qualifications - Life Science or Allied Medicine graduate with a valid certification from AAPC or AHIMA - Hands-on coding experience across multispecialty Evaluation and Management services including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Urgent Care, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Otolaryngology - Strong understanding of Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy, and Physiology - Expertise in determining E and M levels (99202 to 99215) using Medical Decision Making criteria and applying modifiers per NCCI and CPT guidelines - Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems and guidelines Why Join Us At Optum India, you will be part of a mission-driven organisation committed to advancing equitable healthcare on a global scale. - AAPC or AHIMA certification mandatory - Graduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine - Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding - Experience in multispecialty E and M coding - Knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, and Physiology - Familiarity with NCCI edits, LCD, and NCD determinations - Ability to code 12 charts per hour with high accuracy - Understanding of AMA, AHA, and CMS guideline updates - HIPAA compliance knowledge - Strong team collaboration and communication skills
