Medical Coder - Evaluation and Management

Role Overview Optum India, a global leader in health services and technology, is hiring a Medical Coder to join its growing team in Chennai. In this role, you will work under direct supervision to accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes from medical records across multiple clinical settings, directly contributing to improved health outcomes and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities - Verify and abstract relevant data from medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes with accurate modifiers - Code for multispecialty outpatient clinics, urgent care centres, and inpatient hospital settings while maintaining a target of 12 charts per hour - Review and analyse medical records to add or modify CPT codes for minor surgical procedures, vaccines, and laboratory services based on documentation - Track and implement updates from AMA, AHA, and CMS guidelines on an ongoing basis - Check NCCI edits and LCD and NCD coverage determinations and modify codes and modifiers accordingly - Ensure strict adherence to HIPAA confidentiality policies and maintain the security of all patient data - Organise and prioritise work to ensure timely coding and resolution of edits in compliance with regulatory and client guidelines Required Qualifications - Life Science or Allied Medicine graduate with a valid certification from AAPC or AHIMA - Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in multispecialty Evaluation and Management medical coding - Experience coding for specialties such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Urgent Care, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Otolaryngology - Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines - Proven ability to determine EM levels from 99202 to 99215 based on Medical Decision Making and apply appropriate modifiers as per NCCI and CPT guidelines - Sound knowledge of Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy, and Physiology - Ability to extract and assign screening CPT codes and PQRS codes from clinical documentation Why Join Us At Optum India, you will be part of a purpose-driven organisation that is advancing health optimisation globally, working alongside talented peers in an inclusive culture that supports your career growth and development.
