Patent Specialist

Role Overview Saint-Gobain Group in India is looking for an experienced Patent Specialist to join its patent team at SGRI, Chennai. In this role, you will collaborate closely with R&D and business units to protect Saint-Gobain innovations and build a robust, strategically driven worldwide patent portfolio. You will be responsible for identifying patentable inventions, managing patent prosecution, and supporting enforcement and litigation activities across India and international jurisdictions. Key Responsibilities - Prepare comprehensive IP opinions covering patentability, freedom-to-operate, and invalidity assessments - Analyse and interpret search results from multiple patent and technical sources to deliver actionable insights - Monitor technology trends, competitor activity, and geographic patent landscapes through structured patent watch programmes and share findings with R&D and business teams - Draft and review patent specifications for India filings and adapt Indian priority applications for PCT, EPO, and other international routes - Draft and manage responses to office actions in India and overseas, ensuring full compliance with applicable patent laws and deadlines - Assist in patent opposition proceedings and provide technical research support for enforcement and litigation activities Required Qualifications - Master of Science, or a Bachelor or Master degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from a premier academic institution - 8 to 10 years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution within an R&D or law firm environment, along with at least 2 years in a people management capacity - Registration as a Patent Agent with the Indian Patent Office is preferable - Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English Why Join Us Saint-Gobain is a global leader in sustainable construction and high-performance materials, offering a dynamic environment where your patent expertise will directly shape innovation strategy. - 8-10 years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution in R&D or law firm settings - Minimum 2 years of people management experience - Proficiency in preparing IP opinions including patentability, FTO, and invalidity - Experience drafting and responding to office actions in India and international jurisdictions - Familiarity with PCT, EPO, and global patent filing procedures - Patent Agent Registration with the Indian Patent Office (preferred) - Strong analytical skills for patent watch and competitive intelligence - Excellent written and verbal English communication skills - Degree in Science or Engineering from a premier institution
