Medical Coder

Role Overview Optum India, a global leader in technology-enabled healthcare services, is looking for a skilled Medical Coder to join its Chennai team. In this full-time role, you will play a direct part in improving patient health outcomes by ensuring accurate and compliant medical coding across inpatient and outpatient records. Key Responsibilities - Assign accurate ICD-10 and PCS codes to medical records in line with defined SLA accuracy standards - Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient data confidentiality at all times - Identify and evaluate inconsistencies or discrepancies in medical data and escalate queries to the appropriate supervisor or responsible party - Meet established quality benchmarks, productivity targets, and turnaround time requirements - Report discharge dispositions for all records as per Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rules - Apply AHA-approved coding conventions and official guidelines for inpatient and outpatient coding encounters - Maintain minimum data standards for accuracy and productivity as per defined KRAs and client SLAs Required Qualifications - Graduate or postgraduate degree in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine such as BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Dental, Pharmacy, or Nursing - Active certification from AAPC or AHIMA including CCS, CPC, CPC-H, or CCS-P - Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience in Acute Surgery or Emergency Department coding - Strong working knowledge of Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology, and Diagnosis Coding - High analytical ability with a proven commitment to accuracy and quality - Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English Why Join Us At Optum India, you will be part of a mission-driven organisation dedicated to making healthcare more equitable and accessible for everyone. - Degree in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing) - AAPC or AHIMA certification such as CCS, CPC, CPC-H, or CCS-P - Minimum 1 year of experience in Acute Surgery or ED coding - Proficiency in ICD-10 and PCS coding systems - Strong knowledge of Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology - Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and CMS guidelines - High analytical and problem-solving skills - Excellent English communication skills
