Job Description

Role Overview Larsen and Toubro is seeking an experienced Geological Expert to serve as Geotechnical Manager for a large-scale underground tunnelling project. This is a senior technical leadership position responsible for managing all geotechnical engineering aspects of the project, from ground investigations and design review to construction support and risk management. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in tunnelling methodologies and ground behavior to ensure safe, cost-effective, and technically compliant project delivery. Key Responsibilities - Review and interpret geotechnical investigation reports, borehole logs, lab test results, and geophysical data to identify ground conditions including soil strata, rock mass classification, groundwater levels, faults, and weak zones - Review and approve geotechnical and tunnel design documents covering alignment, excavation methods, support systems, and lining designs in compliance with IS, BS, Eurocodes, and ITA guidelines - Provide technical input for selection of tunnelling methodology such as TBM, NATM, SEM, or Cut and Cover, and coordinate with structural, hydraulic, and MEP teams on design interfaces - Deliver continuous geotechnical support during tunnelling, shaft construction, and underground works including guidance on excavation sequences, face stability, and ground support measures like rock bolts, shotcrete, and grouting - Develop and oversee a comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring plan using piezometers, inclinometers, settlement markers, extensometers, and convergence measurements, analyzing data for early warning signs - Maintain the Geotechnical Risk Register, prepare method statements, and support emergency response planning for geotechnical hazards including ground collapse, water ingress, and face instability - Evaluate groundwater inflow risks and recommend dewatering, grouting, or waterproofing measures while monitoring their impact on excavation stability - Liaise with clients, consultants, independent engineers, and regulatory authorities on geotechnical matters and participate in technical meetings and risk workshops - Prepare and review geotechnical design notes, construction reports, risk assessments, and technical documentation supporting claims, variations, and dispute resolution - Lead, mentor, and coordinate geotechnical engineers, site engineers, and monitoring teams while promoting best practices in geotechnical engineering and tunnelling Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering; Master's degree preferred - Minimum 10 to 15 years of experience in geotechnical engineering with significant exposure to underground tunnelling projects - Proven track record on metro, rail, road, or utility tunnel projects - Strong working knowledge of tunnelling methods, ground support systems, and geotechnical instrumentation - Proficiency in geotechnical software and reporting tools - Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to make sound engineering decisions under challenging site conditions Why Join Us Larsen and Toubro is one of India's most respected engineering and construction conglomerates, offering professionals the opportunity to work on landmark infrastructure projects with cutting-edge technology. Requirements

- 10 to 15 years of geotechnical engineering experience with underground tunnelling exposure - Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, specialization in Geotechnical Engineering (Master's preferred) - Proven experience on metro, rail, road, or utility tunnel projects - Knowledge of tunnelling methods including TBM, NATM, SEM, and Cut and Cover - Expertise in ground support systems such as rock bolts, shotcrete, steel ribs, forepoling, and grouting - Experience developing and managing geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs - Familiarity with IS, BS, Eurocodes, and ITA guidelines - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to interpret complex geotechnical data - Proficiency in geotechnical software and technical reporting tools - Strong leadership, coordination, and stakeholder communication skills
