Job Description

Role Overview Standard Chartered India is looking for an experienced Assistant Manager Trade Operations to join their Chennai team. This mid-senior role is central to managing trade finance transactions including document checking, negotiations, and guarantees while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and customer service. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of ICC rules, strong operational discipline, and the ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced banking environment. Key Responsibilities - Establish and maintain strong working relationships with clients to ensure timely and accurate responses to trade finance queries and business requirements - Scrutinise trade documents against letters of credit and ICC rules, identify discrepancies, and communicate findings clearly to clients for rectification - Ensure all transactions are processed, checked, and released in compliance with statutory, regulatory, and internal operational guidelines within approved limits - Handle negotiations with a thorough understanding of ICC rules, bill dispatch procedures, and trade payment messages - Manage guarantee operations including text vetting, processing, and claim handling in line with URDG and ISP rules - Monitor transactions effectively using TD functionality and maintain awareness of available balances, past drawings, and SHI details - Comply with Group Money Laundering Prevention Policy and report all suspicious transactions to the Line Manager - Lead and manage the operations team by ensuring adequate staffing, planned leave coverage, ongoing training, and high motivation levels - Identify and implement continuous improvement and standardisation initiatives using LEAN techniques - Uphold Group values, sanctions policies, and the Code of Conduct at all times Required Qualifications - Strong working knowledge of ICC rules and their practical application in trade finance operations - Proficiency in document checking, letter of credit scrutiny, and discrepancy management - Familiarity with banking products, back-office operations, and anti-money laundering policies and procedures - CDCS certification preferred; willingness to pursue CSDG certification is an advantage - Experience managing teams and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders including country offices and regulators - Sound understanding of risk identification, mitigation, and governance frameworks - Ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple trade transactions concurrently Why Join Us Standard Chartered is a globally respected bank with over 170 years of history, offering a purpose-driven career in an inclusive and values-led organisation. Requirements

- Knowledge of ICC rules including URDG and ISP - Experience in trade finance operations including document checking and guarantees - Familiarity with anti-money laundering policies and procedures - Proficiency in TD functionality and trade payment messages - CDCS certification or willingness to obtain it - Team management and leadership skills - Strong customer focus and stakeholder management abilities - Understanding of LEAN process improvement techniques - Knowledge of banking back-office operations - Compliance awareness including sanctions and Group Code of Conduct
