Software Engineering Manager

Role Overview Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, and deployment of next-generation digital and eCommerce products as part of CAT Digital India. This is a high-impact leadership role requiring a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong people management skills. The successful candidate will be instrumental in establishing and maturing software engineering capability in India and will report to the CAT Digital India Senior Engineering Manager. Key Responsibilities - Lead, hire, mentor, and manage cross-functional teams of software engineers and pod leads building world-class eCommerce applications - Collaborate with product managers and senior engineers to define technology strategy, product roadmaps, and architectural design - Drive engineering best practices including craftsmanship, resilience, scalability, and continuous improvement - Manage the full development lifecycle including planning, estimation, prioritisation, stakeholder management, and delivery tracking - Encourage innovation, adoption of cutting-edge technologies, self-organisation, and diversity within teams - Oversee performance evaluations, career development, and overall employee satisfaction for direct reports - Coordinate design walkthroughs and reviews ensuring adherence to standards and specifications - Balance technical leadership with sound business judgment to guide technology choices in a fast-paced environment Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant discipline - 15 or more years of experience in designing and developing software applications in Java or Scala, or 10 or more years in Java with a Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field - 3 or more years of experience managing cross-functional teams of 8 to 14 members - 5 or more years of hands-on experience with public cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure - Deep expertise in Java/J2EE and Spring Boot - Proven experience with microservices architecture, MVC, event-driven patterns, and scalable platform development - Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, AWS SNS, or Kinesis - Proficiency with datastores including MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL - Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GoCD, or Azure DevOps - Working knowledge of Agile/Scrum frameworks - Strong command of data structures, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals - Knowledge of eCommerce platforms like HCL Commerce (WCS) Version 8.0 or higher is preferred - AWS/Azure certifications and experience with React, TypeScript, or JavaScript frameworks are advantageous - Exposure to BPMN or workflow/rules engine technologies like Camunda, Temporal, or Drools is a plus Why Join Us At Caterpillar, you become part of a global community of problem solvers and innovators who are dedicated to building a more sustainable and connected world. - 15+ years of software development experience in Java or Scala (or 10+ years with a Master's degree) - 3+ years managing cross-functional engineering teams of 8-14 members - 5+ years of hands-on experience with AWS or Azure cloud platforms - Deep expertise in Java/J2EE and Spring Boot - Strong knowledge of microservices, event-driven architecture, and scalable system design - Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, or Kinesis - Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases including MongoDB, Redis, MySQL, and PostgreSQL - Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, GoCD, or Azure DevOps - Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies - Knowledge of eCommerce platforms such as HCL Commerce or WebSphere Commerce preferred - Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and project planning skills - AWS/Azure certifications are a plus - Experience with React, TypeScript, or JavaScript frameworks is advantageous
