Lead Engineer - Electrical Motor Design

Role Overview ZF Group is looking for a skilled Lead Engineer in Electrical Motor Design to join their Chennai-based engineering team. This role involves designing, developing, and optimizing electrical motors for electric and hybrid vehicle platforms. You will work at the intersection of electromagnetic design, thermal management, and system integration to deliver best-in-class traction motor solutions. Key Responsibilities - Design and optimize AC and DC motors including BLDC, PMSM, Induction, and Reluctance Motors for automotive traction and auxiliary applications - Perform detailed electromagnetic analysis using tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Motor CAD, JMAG, or Flux - Develop 2D and 3D designs for stator, rotor, windings, magnets, laminations, and related motor components - Conduct thermal and mechanical stress analysis to support high-speed automotive motor development - Interpret simulation results and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency maps, torque capability, NVH behaviour, and thermal stability during real-world drive cycles - Conduct formal design reviews, technical risk assessments, and DFMEA activities - Collaborate with inverter and control teams, mechanical design, manufacturing, and vehicle integration teams - Drive innovation in motor design to achieve superior power density and system efficiency - Prepare technical documentation including design specifications, motor BOMs, PDSS, PDS, drawings, test instructions, and DV/PV validation plans Required Qualifications - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field - 5 or more years of proven experience in automotive motor design for EV or hybrid platforms - Hands-on expertise in ANSYS Maxwell, JMAG, Motor CAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and 2D/3D CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, or Catia - Strong understanding of traction motor thermal management, high-speed rotor dynamics, electromagnetic material selection, NVH mitigation, and magnet behaviour under high load and temperature - Familiarity with motor control algorithms including FOC, DTC, and sensorless control - Experience with 800V systems, high-speed motors above 16,000 rpm, and hairpin winding technology - Prior experience working with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, or EV startups Why Join Us ZF Group offers a dynamic and innovative work environment with a strong focus on career development, global collaboration, and sustainability.
