Lead Network Engineer

Role Overview athenahealth is looking for a seasoned Lead Network Engineer to anchor its Chennai site operations and serve as the go-to expert for complex network challenges across wireless, LAN, WAN, and security environments. This is a senior individual-contributor role that also carries leadership responsibility during critical incidents, with occasional travel to Pune or Bangalore for major implementations. You will work within a globally distributed network engineering team that manages enterprise-grade infrastructure and partners with vendors and peer teams to keep connectivity secure and reliable. Key Responsibilities - Act as the primary escalation point for all Chennai site network issues spanning LAN, WAN, WLAN, and security layers - Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain networking and security equipment across a multi-vendor environment - Lead troubleshooting of high-complexity incidents involving firewalls, VPN, wireless, routing, and switching - Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation and provide onsite leadership during critical events - Provision and manage site-to-site IPsec VPNs and WAN connectivity with carriers and service providers - Coordinate with service providers, hardware and software vendors, and technical support partners to drive issue resolution - Track and report on network capacity and performance, and address emerging concerns proactively - Collaborate with peer engineering teams on network design, automation initiatives, and long-term strategy - Leverage AI-enabled tools to analyse incident patterns and support documentation or capacity planning, validating outputs before operational use - Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for network systems and procedures - Mentor team members and contribute to process improvements and knowledge sharing Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience - 10 or more years of professional network engineering experience, including production 24x7 environments - Strong multi-vendor expertise with Juniper, Aruba, Palo Alto, Dell SONiC, and VeloCloud - Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls and GlobalProtect preferred - Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, routing protocols, and switching technologies - Experience with wireless implementation, operations, and troubleshooting; Aruba experience strongly preferred - Familiarity with public and private cloud networking concepts - Working knowledge of Linux networking troubleshooting - Understanding of structured cabling standards and physical layer diagnostics - Exposure to Ansible, Git, Python, and EVPN/VXLAN is a plus - Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills Why Join Us athenahealth offers a culture built on inclusiveness, accountability, and continuous learning, alongside a comprehensive benefits package that includes health coverage, commuter support, tuition assistance, and flexible working arrangements.
