Database Reliability Engineer - PostgreSQL, pgvector

Position Overview

We are looking for a Database Platform Reliability Engineer (DBRE) with deep operational expertise in AWS-managed data services to own the reliability, performance, security, and scalability of our growing polyglot data estate.

In this role, you will manage a diverse database environment—spanning PostgreSQL (RDS/Aurora), search engines (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch), and graph systems (Neo4j)—while partnering directly with application and AI/ML teams on database design and platform selection. If you are passionate about database reliability engineering, automation, and expanding into AI-adjacent patterns like vector search (pgvector) and RAG architecture, this role offers room to scale both technically and strategically. Responsibilities

• Fleet Reliability & HA/DR:

Manage high availability, Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR), disaster recovery, and zero-downtime upgrades across RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, and Neo4j.

• Performance & Capacity:

Lead query tuning, index optimization, sharding strategies, parameter configuration, and proactive capacity planning.

• Automation & IaC:

Provision and manage data platforms using Terraform , Ansible , and Docker/Kubernetes integrated into CI/CD pipelines.

• Observability & Incident Response:

Build monitoring, logging, and alerting via Prometheus, Grafana, and CloudWatch ; participate in an on-call rotation for advanced troubleshooting.

• Data Architecture & AI Enablement:

Advise development teams on schema design and database selection; implement and optimize vector search capabilities ( pgvector , OpenSearch vector engine) for AI/ML workloads.

• Security & Compliance:

Enforce network isolation (VPC), encryption at rest/transit (KMS), and fine-grained access management (IAM). Key Qualifications

• Database Experience:

4 to 7 years administering production PostgreSQL on AWS (RDS/Aurora), alongside hands-on operational experience with OpenSearch/Elasticsearch or Neo4j .

• DBRE Fundamentals:

Deep knowledge of backup strategies, failover mechanics, performance tuning, and cross-platform data modelling.

• DevOps Tooling:

Proficient with Terraform, Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD tools, and scripting ( Python / Bash ).

• Bonus Skills:

Hands-on experience with vector search, Redis/ElastiCache, DynamoDB, or LLM/RAG application architectures.

• Certifications (Preferred):

AWS Certified Database – Specialty, CKA, or platform-specific certifications (PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, Neo4j).
